In yoga there is a concept called Dinacharya which means the mastery of a day or your daily routine.
The concept of dinacharya acknowledges the interconnectedness of our bodies, minds, and the natural world. It emphasizes the importance of following a structured routine in alignment with the natural cycles of the day.
By aligning our daily routines with the cycles of nature, we can enhance and hone our physical health, mental presence, clarity, and spiritual growth.
Dinacharya is a flexible framework. Folks can adapt it to suit their specific needs and circumstances while staying mindful of their own unique constitution and requirements.
I have been obsessed with this concept ever since I heard about it. I try to have mastery over my day by waking and sleeping at the same time each day. I also work and rest at similar times each day.
Here’s a snapshot of what a typical weekday looks like for me:
I rise without an alarm most everyday between 5 - 6 am.
I have coffee and journal
I either teach (at 6 am, 9 am or both) or have a longer creative morning
I then work by myself or with others coworking (with lots of breaks)
After I'm finished working I spend time outside
I eat dinner around 6ish (I usually fast during the day but sometimes I eat lunch if my body needs to)
I wind down at 8ish and am in bed early.
This is my general 'dinacharya' that changes a little here and there.
I enjoy teaching, doing events, running my website and patreon page and all the other hats I wear as a small business owner. It's an honor and joy to balance it all.
Aligning with natural rhythms has been crucial for my mental and emotional well being. One of the ways I do this is by utilizing a moon cycle bracelet made by Enlightened Crystals Om to track my cycle. I recommend anyone with a cycle try this method to see if it would be helpful.
The bracelet has 28 beads and a charm to move each day so you know where you are in your cycle and what specific needs your body has. The different phases in our cycles are designated by different beads and every bracelet comes with a brochure explaining the different phases.
I have found that it is so helpful to align my work events and social calendar to these different phases.
I feel very privileged that I can partially design my schedule in this way to be as aligned as possible with my own natural rhythms. It feels incredibly supportive to balance my time and energy by more fully aligning with nature and natural rhythms.
Dinacharya is a helpful concept that can bring awareness to how we spend our days. When we apply conscious awareness to our lives we can make shifts and come into deeper alignment.
