7 ways to deepen your yoga practice

Deepening your yoga practice involves going beyond the physical aspect of yoga and integrating its spiritual, mental and emotional dimensions.

Here are seven ways to deepen your yoga practice:

  1. Consistency:

    Practice yoga regularly. Consistent practice builds strength, flexibility, and awareness. Set aside a specific time each day to practice, even if it's just for a few minutes.

  2. Mindfulness:

    Pay attention to your breath, movements, and thoughts during your practice. Allow yourself to be present in the moment, and let go of distractions and worries.

  3. Explore Different Styles:

    Try different styles of yoga to challenge yourself and discover new ways of moving and breathing. Whether it's Vinyasa, Hatha, Yin or Restorative yoga, each style has its unique benefits.

  4. Set Intentions:

    Before each practice, set an intention for yourself. This can be a physical goal, such as mastering a challenging pose, or a mental one, such as cultivating patience or compassion. This intention can be something you want to cultivate or even something you want to let go of.

  5. Dive in where you feel the call:

    Explore the spiritual aspect of yoga by incorporating meditation, pranayama (breathing exercises), and mantra (repeating a word or phrase) into your practice. Go with whichever one you feel most called to. These practices can help you cultivate a deeper connection to yourself and the world around you. Some choose seated meditation, where others choose chanting or dancing. Go deeper where you feel most facsinated and interested.

  6. Learn from Others:

    Attend workshops and classes with experienced teachers who can guide you and help you deepen your practice. Seek out books and podcasts on yoga philosophy, history and practice to expand your knowledge. View the resources page here to get started.

  7. Self-Reflection:

    Take time after your practice to reflect on what you experienced. Journaling or simply taking a few moments to sit quietly and observe your thoughts can help you gain insights into yourself and your practice.

Remember, the most important thing is to approach your practice with an open heart and mind, self care and to be patient with yourself as you deepen your practice over time.
